“How come nobody’s talking about it?” Clara asked. “Some kids walk by it on the way to school.”

“Oh, you’ll hear about it soon. Trust me. The ghosts moved it. I’m going out again tonight. Those ghosts will be back. We need to find out what they want.”

“We? Abby—”

“Come on, Clara.” The girls locked eyes. “Something weird is happening. We need to find out what it is. Please, spend the night.”

“It just sounds crazy.”

“I know,” Abby said. “I still can’t believe what I saw.”

“Well, probably not ghosts. You can call me skeptical.”

“Look,” Abby said. “We’ll go out. And if it’s nothing, we’ll go home. No harm. But if it’s something . . .”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Clara said, sighing.

“It’s our civic duty to do something.”

“Civic duty? LOL, Abby! You sound like my mom.”

The bell sounded.

“So you’ll stay over?” Abby asked. Clara had already started to walk away.

“Sure! But we’re only going out for a little bit. I don’t want to get in trouble. I’ve got a swim meet on Sunday. And I’m not missing it. Especially not because you think there are ghosts in Largo Bay.”
